Living in a loft usually means wide-open space and tall ceilings that allow you plenty of freedom when choosing a layout and design for your home. What a loft doesn’t supply much of is privacy. That doesn’t mean you’re stuck with your bedroom being visible to guests in your living room, though. You can get a little more privacy in your loft with a few simple changes or additions — and you don’t have to give up the open feeling that makes loft living so appealing to do it.
Use Furniture
The right furniture arrangement may help provide privacy in your loft. Large pieces such as a bookcase, armoire or entertainment center effectively blocks private areas of your loft from view in general living areas. For example, if your bedroom area is adjacent to the living room, place the large cabinet that holds your TV and media equipment with its back to your bed, so your bedroom won’t be visible to guests enjoying a movie or game on the couch. If you want to make your home office private, surround the area with large bookcases to form “walls” for the space. As long as the furniture piece is large enough, it can provide plenty of privacy.
Use Room Dividers
If you don’t want to rearrange your furniture to create privacy for your loft, room dividers are an ideal alternative. Folding screens are a budget-friendly option that easily can be moved around the space, but they may not be large enough to provide adequate privacy. Instead, consider modular dividers designed specifically for large, open spaces like a loft. Some of these dividers are freestanding structures that can be moved around the loft based on your needs. Sliding options that fit on installed tracks also are available, so you may open and close off specific areas when necessary. Modular room dividers come in a variety of colors, patterns and materials, which may add a decorative look to your loft as well.
Get Creative With Fabric
For a versatile, inexpensive privacy option in your loft, curtains or fabric panels may work well. With tracks installed in the ceiling, you can hang the panels around specific areas of the loft, such as your bedroom or home office, so they’re not visible from the rest of the space. When you want to open up your loft, you simply pull or tie back the curtains. Curtains and fabric privacy panels offer plenty of design options since they are available in a variety of materials. For an understated look, go with simple cotton or linen curtains. If you want a grand, dramatic look, choose velvet or satin panels.
Add a Partition Wall
If you own your loft and are willing to make permanent changes to the layout in the name of privacy, a partition wall is your best option. It’s not as expensive or difficult to build as an exterior wall because it doesn’t have to be load-bearing. Depending on your loft’s layout, you only may need to build a small partition wall to hide your bedroom area from view. However, if you want total privacy, you can add two partition walls and a door to your bedroom, home office or other space you want to shield from view.
